PhD Research Seminar

by Christian Laux (VGSF) and Rainer Jankowitsch (VGSF)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is intended as a platform for PhD students to present their research and receive feedback from faculty and colleagues.

Each student has to present one paper which is discussed by another student. Thus, the format is similar to conferences where paper presentations are followed by a discussion. 60 minutes are reserved for presentation, 15 minutes for the discussant, and the remaining 15 minutes for a general discussion.

First and second year students are expected to present preliminary versions (extended proposals) of their summer papers. Third and fourth year students are expected to present new research or revised versions of their summer papers, which are planned to be included in the thesis.

The papers must be sent out to all participants at least two weeks before the scheduled presentation. Discussants are assigned by the instructors, unless students volunteer to do discussions.

EVALUATION:

Class room participation 20%
Paper presentation 50%
Discussion 30%
